The ‘what’s next?’ was a request – “Would you panel my sitting room?”. I could hardly refuse; first a Library, then a Bathroom, panelling would be simple work considering the complexity of the two former commissions. Again I ‘set out my stall’, “I think it should look like this”. My insistence that the feature work and detailing should be a certain way, was passed with a nod. The fact that I had ‘killed the bull’ twice, gave me the advantage to do as I thought best. He left me to it. Thinking it was going to be a rather boring exercise, I turned it into something that wasn’t. The devil was in the detail. Mouldings became an important issue and they were not standard. The panel counter rail skirting and cornice mouldings were my own interpretation of the Georgian style. This made the jobs more interesting. A dentilated frieze rail, panelled window reveals and trellised radiator grills were all constructed in selected joinery grade Pine and installed with no fixings shown. The decorator did the rest. The mantra “I am very pleased” was all I wanted to hear …and I did.
