I got a phone call from ‘his nibs’ as I called him. “I want a French Empire bathroom” – it was “I want” not “I would like”. I recognised this as an order, but was I prepared to do it? Again, it was a considerable amount of work. “I will, but it will be my interpretation of that style” I countered, and he accepted. French Empire was a brief and not particularly popular style, considered by some to be vulgar or over-the-top. The style was only indulged in by the wealthy. I had no experience of it but did recognise it for what it was. I was shown an area on the first floor where the room was to be and the walls did not exist – I would have to make the room. I created the room with panelled walls with detailed ebony strings, a break-front vanity unit with a marble top, columned kennel and doors panelled in Pomelle sapelle with ebony patras, ormolu mounts etc. The detailing and decoration were considerable. I was particularly proud of the entrance doors and framed mirror. In fact, I was proud of all of it. I considered the work to be a successful rendition of the French Empire style. So did ‘his nibs’ to my relief. “I’m very pleased” – once again that phrase. Praise indeed but what’s next?
