Four large cabinets built as two pairs. A considerable amount of dialogue was indulged in during the planning of these cabinets. ‘Function over form’ – an adage that I have great respect for, was applied to the interiors. Caroline knew what she wanted but didn’t know what they should look like. No stone was left unturned in what should be included – galleried, rollout shelves, specific areas to house computer equipment and files, drawers, Pigeon holes for incoming mail. I listened to her requests.
Precision was the name of the game, but as to their look, that was down to me. Minimalistic suspended, severe but luxurious, Satinwood veneer laid in juxtaposition on a carcass of Latvian birch plywood, adding an air of modernity. Touch latches were applied so not to intrude on their pristine facades. Large iron shoes were invented to take the weight of their suspension. The interiors were laid in pear wood to add to the sophistication. Transportation and installation were things I don’t care to remember but looking back on the memory of this very difficult commission, I think I cut the mustard!
